Semester 1 Classroom Activities

Pratical Life Activities – Life Skills

Care of and respect for the environment and each other sees the children setting the table for lunch and washing up afterwards.

The Kitchen

Daily routines and activities are a large part of the Montessori classroom.

The children are responsible for cleaning and tidying the classroom at the end of the day. Keeping track of possessions and organisation are skills that are encouraged and nutured.

Sensorial Materials – Geometric Solids

The children explore the dimensions of each shape and then learn the language for each shape.

For example the sphere is round and smooth with no edges or facets, whereas the cube has 6 facets and edges.

Children match each shape to it's base, eg rectangular prism; build to see how the solids fit together; and look for these geometric shapes in the environment around them.

We love to celebrate birthdays at Montessori.

As the birthday child carries the globe of the continents (the Earth) around a candle (the Sun) for each year they have lived, the children recite:

The earth goes round the sun
The earth goes round the sun
Round and round and round and round
The earth goes round the sun”

Illustrating the fact the one year passes when the sun has orbited the earth.
After each year the parent tells a story, or shows a photo for that particular age.
Of course we sing happy birthday, in Italian and share a birthday treat.

Culture – Geography

Working with land and water forms.
The child pours water into the isthmus and around the strait, then touches the water and land forms and learns their names.
Here the child is using play-dough to make the forms herself.
