The Challenge

The main purpose of us working together is to lift the English literacy and numeracy levels of Indigenous students to that of national standards. We then should see our students up there with the rest of them. Then, it will be time for us to celebrate their successes. What a day it will be!

May O'Brien, NIELNS Ambassador, introducing the Dare to Lead Report.

The Commitment

Between 16 June 2000 and 31 May 2001, one thousand one hundred and sixty three Australian school leaders attended Dare to Lead forums held across the country.

Three messages dominated presentations and discussion.

  • Something must be done.
  • Something can be done; we can make a difference if we choose to.
  • Success will be achieved by working in partnerships for which we all bear responsibility.

These are the directions Australian Principals Associations Professional Development Council (APAPDC) has pursued.

Who is it for

  • The children
  • The profession
  • The country

The Plan

During 2003 a coalition of schools, their principals and education organisations publicly committed to improvements in Indigenous education was established. This coalition comprises of:

  • Member schools with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, committed to defined improvements in student achievement within a given timeframe.

  • Member schools without Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students committed to improving the quality of their teaching about Australia's Indigenous peoples, and advancing the cause of reconciliation.

  • Other education organisations and agencies which have important roles to play in supporting both these goals.

To provide practical ideas, among other avenues, through the very well-regarded professional development materials What Works as part of the Work Program.

Networked support will be established through buddy schools, an electronic newsletter, regional contacts and state forums. A strong sense of being part of a national collegial effort will be fostered by all possible means.

So where do we fit in?

Within the framework of the project, PVMS is a member school . whose role it is to improve the quality of teaching about Australia's Indigenous peoples, and to advance the cause of reconciliation.

We are fortunate to be associated with two teachers with experience in remote indigenous communities. Lidia has returned from 2 years at Mulan in the Kimberly and brings with her a wealth of knowledge about indigenous culture. We all continue to learn from Lidia's experience and in so doing are developing a much stronger understanding of this ancient culture. Lena is working in a similar area in a community known as Billiluna and keeps us informed regularly by photos of her experience.

Indigenous perspectives are interwoven with our curriculum in an attempt to realize our commitment to the heritage of the land and people of our nation.
